I have had a few requests asking
about the Maybelline Baby Skin so what better to do than a full review? The
full name of this product is actually the Maybelline Baby Skin Instant Pore
Eraser (what a mouthful!) but it’s usually known as just Baby Skin.
Infuriatingly, it’s one of very few Maybelline items that isn’t available in
Australia (boo!). Here’s what I thought of Baby Skin.
The Brand – Maybelline New York
The Brand – Maybelline New York
Maybelline is another brand owned
by Big Mama L’Oreal and has been around since 1917 and was one of the very
first “everyday cosmetic” brands around. It’s actually quite a funny story, apparently
the lad who came up with Maybelline (good old Thomas Williams) had an older
sister (Maybel) who was keen to get her a man. Thomas, being the clever chappie
that he was, decided to help the lovely Maybel accentuate her pretty face and
together they came up with the Maybelline Cake Mascara. in case you’re
wondering, Maybel got the man…I don’t know what that says about looks vs
personality but it’s a good story! Mayelline New York is now a global brand
(No.1 according to their website…) and they specialise in affordable, on-trend
cosmetics. They are also the official sponsor of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, in
case you needed another reason to love them!
The
Product – Baby Skin Instant Pore Eraser ($6.99 US for 20ml)
This was a product that I
definitely wanted to pick up on my trip to the US and I liked it so much that I
bought 2. Also because I knew how hard they were to get here in Australia. Baby
Skin is a clear, silicone based gel primer that has been described as a dupe
for the Smashbox Photo Finish Primer (similar texture). It both smoothes and
reduce the appearance of pores for a soft, flawless finish (according to the
advertising). It comes in very cute baby blue squeezy tube with baby pink
writing (they were really milking the baby theme here!) and a screw top
(hate!). It’s a very convenient size for travel or just to pop into your
handbag. I just wish this was easier to find in Australia!
Side note: The website sasa.com stocks this for $13.30 AUD
but I haven’t ever used them before. If you know anywhere else that Australians
can source this from, please let me know!
Using
the product
The most important thing to note
with this primer is that a little goes a long way! You can use it in a number
of ways: alone to blur imperfections, as a full face primer or just on areas
with particularly visible pores. I usually use it as a full face primer or on
very “porey” areas. It does a really good job with blurring imperfections and
hiding pores. I do find the texture a little weird, it kind of feels a bit
slippery on the skin. I’ve also heard it described as velvety. It’s pretty
decent as a primer for makeup wear, but I wouldn’t say it’s the best. I think
they best way to use this would be around the nose/chin/forehead (that’s where I
have noticeable pores anyway) and use a primer targeted as promoting wear time
all over as well as the Baby Skin. I have heard a few people say this makes
their skin feel oilier but I personally haven’t experienced that problem. I
think this is a great little product that does exactly what it says on the label.
Overall Score
The Good
Blurs imperfections.
Reduces visibility of pores.
Leaves skin baby soft.
The Bad
Difficult to source in Australia.
Not the best primer at promoting makeup wear

I hate when they don't release hyped up products in Australia it's such a tease!! It looks more gel-y (?) than the other primers I've seen. Still intrigued to try it :)

It's the worst! I was so pleased to find it in the US, I'll have to investigate how else to buy it when I eventually run out. It does have a more gel-like consistency, I would liken it to the Smashbox or NYX primers I think.
I have this on a watchlist on a Japanese website!
I want to see the difference between The Porefessional and this.
Thanks for reviewing!!

I quite like it but I haven't tried the Porefessional yet so I can't say which I like better. I think the Porefessional is more like a liquid and this has a more gel-like consistency.
I haven't found my holy grail primer as of yet, but the one I'm using atm is by mecca cosmetica, and it gives such a nice glow, but doesn't really reduce the visibility of pores, this might be a great budget buy!

Ooh, which primer is that? This works pretty well on pores but it's so hard to get ahold of in Australia
